Artist Statement

My major/recent artworks include the fusion of abstract expressionism elements and Japanese anime culture. This style represents my Japanese American identity. Using my globalized perspective, I express my thoughts/emotions through personal life experiences and current social circumstances, especially in Japan and the United States. My eternal goal as an artist is to create various artworks that encourage the audience and myself. In front of the artwork, I am in a different world, experiencing unexplainable feelings and gaining more confidence. Art contains energy that encourages us to overcome tough social circumstances and break through stereotypes. I want to share this energy and enjoy communicating in a peaceful environment. Furthermore, I hope my work will give the audience opportunities to follow their ideal path.

To paint/draw both abstract expressionism elements and Japanese anime culture, I use various water-based mediums and drawing mediums on various types of support, including mixed media paper. Each material has its meaning to my identity and/or personal memories/connections. For example, Sumi ink is a common material I use in my work, and it represents my Japanese identity and my family. By using relatable materials, I want to deliver the sense of the importance of knowing about oneself to overcome obstacles and follow an ideal path.

In addition to my major art practice, I love experimenting with different new materials, mediums, and styles, both analog and digital. I believe this is also my journey, which leads to evolving myself as an artist. In other words, I will enjoy my journey to search for new views of art that no one has seen before.
